March Madness is here! Only I’m not referring to the NCAA basketball tournament, but L3’s travel schedule for the next few weeks. It’s hard to believe February is already here. The holiday season came and went in a flurry of family gatherings, food, drinks, and was capped off by a Super Bowl blowout so bad that I actually got more enjoyment out of a Radio Shack commercial than the game itself. And in that time we here at L3 Payments didn’t miss a beat. L3 spoke on a panel and attended Internext, iDate and Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas, as well as Xbiz 360 in Hollywood. We had a great time seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones, and we look forward to making 2014 a huge success for our valued merchants!
Speaking of Xbiz, L3 recently contributed to an article in their publication discussing billing trends and predictions for 2014. As recent analysis has shown us, more people are using pre-paid cards to make purchases online and we expect that trend to continue growing in 2014. As a merchant, it’s important to understand the buying behavior of your customers so you can make informed decisions about your product offerings. And SBW allows you to do just that! Happy Holidays, everyone! Here at L3 we’re jollier than St. Nick at an all-you-can-eat buffet to be wrapping up another successful year while we gear up for an exciting 2014. We were so productive in 2013 that I thought it would be fun to take a moment to reflect on some of the newsworthy items from this year:
- In January we attended both the XBIZ and Internext EXPO trade shows
- In March we improved settlement times for ACH merchants
- In April we attended both the Phoenix forum and NACHA Payments trade shows
- In May we worked closely with our sister company, SBW, on enhancements to their Gateway such as new fraud scrubbing options
- In the summer our underwriter John Porichis climbed Mt Kilimanjaro
- In September we moved offices
- In October SBW announced that they will be automatically initiating debits for Gateway fees via ACH or credit card
- In November we all grew mustaches
…and all throughout the year Melody cranked out informative articles with extremely useful information ranging from the importance of quality customer service to combating friendly fraud to the often underestimated value of accepting ACH payments. In addition to all of that, we continued doing what L3 does best: collectively leveraging our years of experience to help keep our merchant’s accounts healthy by monitoring chargebacks, offering customized reporting analysis and providing top notch customer support.
While L3 was busy doing those things, some other notable things happened around the world too. Scientists successfully cloned human stem cells, the pope quit his job, the Boston Red Sox won the world series at Fenway Park for the 1st time in like 400 years, and Hrag even came into the new office a few times! It’s been an interesting year, indeed.

November is here and it’s already shaping up to be a busy month for us at L3! But while there’s enough on our proverbial plates to rival that of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, we still manage to find time for a little levity around the office. That’s why in honor of “Movember” – the month-long event where men grow mustaches to raise awareness for male cancer and men’s health in general – the entire staff at L3 has decided to grow cartoonishly fake-looking mustaches. Alright, fine. Those are indeed fake mustaches. However, I will be strongly encouraging Hrag to grow facial hair in that style, as he looks undeniably handsome.
Perhaps it was the European-inspired mustache I was given in our Movember picture that triggered this thought, but recently it occurred to me that some merchants are not taking advantage of multi-currency processing. Did you know, L3 can facilitate processing solutions in over 30 currencies? If not, you could be leaving money on the table, so please feel free to contact us for more information on how we can get you set up with a multi-currency merchant account.
And speaking of alternative payment methods, Melody recently posted a graphic to our blog titled “5 Things you didn’t know about ACH“. October is here! As I write this newsletter we’re experiencing a rare rain storm in southern California and a welcome drop in temperature as we settle into the Fall season. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy the typically balmy, sunny weather here in SoCal, but mowing my lawn and pulling weeds in 100 degree heat while getting blasted by the sun’s cancerous death rays for the past few months has grown a bit tiresome. So I’m looking forward to a reprieve from the heat, but even more than that I’m excited about the bountiful assortment of tasty treats that Autumn has to offer. From hearty pot pies to warm apple cider to pumpkin-flavored everything, now is the time of year when I stop counting calories and treat every meal like a competitive eating contest!
And of course, Halloween is right around the corner. It’s always fun to see kids dress up as their favorite superhero or movie monster, but even more fun to see adults in full costume. Like last year this guy dressed as Star Wars villain “Darth Maul” pulled up next to me in a BMW X5 at a stop light. How cool is that? Although, I pictured Darth Maul to be more of a Dodge Challenger type of guy. But nevertheless, this gentleman clearly put a lot of effort into his costume and I can certainly appreciate that. Halloween only comes once a year, may as well make the most of it!
At L3, we’ve been making the most of our time by working on several new projects. While I can’t give away any details just yet, keep an eye on our blog for updates in the very near future. Also newsworthy this month, our sister company SBW has announced that they will be automatically initiating debits for Gateway fees from the account of your choice going forward. You can now enjoy the ease of automated payments and the added benefit of saving a trip to the mailbox, or earning points on your credit card. And each month you will receive a statement via email with complete details of any fees charged or credits applied, just as you do today. As part of this transition, SBW will no longer support payment via check, so please be sure to return your completed form via email or fax (805-449-1103) as soon as possible if you haven’t already. Wow, time flies. September 2013 marks the 1 year anniversary of our new website, blog and this very newsletter. On one hand it’s hard to believe a whole year has gone by, but when I reflect on the past year and realize how much we’ve accomplished it’s easy to see where the time has gone. From establishing new banking relationships to attending trade shows to boarding new merchants to climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro (well, one of us, anyway) and most recently moving offices, it’s been a busy and productive 12 months here at L3!
Speaking of our new office, we’re all very excited to have a new L3 headquarters, but what’s more, we’re using this opportunity to become a more environmentally friendly company. Rather than drive our pollution-causing cars to work, we’ve all acquired autonomous, solar-powered hoverboards! In addition to being a Green vehicle, the ease of floating to work each day on a self-driving hoverboard allows us added time to check email and make phone calls. It’s a win/win!
Man, that would be awesome. Joking aside, the nature of our business allows many of us to work remotely. While some of us are within walking distance to L3, others commute from quite a distance. So in planning for our move, it quickly became apparent that we could find a better space which would allow us to increase the efficiency of our business by minimizing time-wasting commutes and, in turn, lessen our environmental footprint. Well, we’ve done just that, and the change has been beneficial to both L3 employees and our valued merchants. But because we’re such a tight-knit group at L3, we couldn’t go too long without seeing each other, so we’ve designated certain days to meet in person to brainstorm ideas, collaborate on projects and, of course, make fun of Hrag.
We all chipped in during the move to our new office, but our COO Melody and our Controller Mike deserve special recognition for coordinating the efforts and ensuring a completely seamless transition. Thanks, Mike and Melody! And somehow, Melody even found time to write a very informative article detailing how chargeback responsibility affects online merchants. Check it out if you haven’t already.

Here at L3 Payments we all work very hard day in and day out, so when summer rolls around we like to take some time off (not all of us at once, of course) to recharge our batteries and do a bit of traveling. However, one person in our office recently took a trip that makes Bear Grylls look like Justin Bieber.
To give you some context, our underwriter, John Porichis, is known around the office for taking epic vacations each year. In fact, John has visited 6 of the 7 continents, with Antarctica being the only uncharted territory. Now, I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure you have to be a penguin to go to Antarctica, so I won’t hold it against John if he doesn’t make it there (even though he tells me it’s possible for a human…and he would know!) But for all the cool stuff John has done, I think this latest adventure is the most impressive. John and his wife took a 23 hour journey from California to Tanzania where they spent 6 days climbing Mt.Kilimanjaro! It took 4.5 days to reach the peak at 19,345 feet and another 1.5 days to come down. Listen, I spent 1 night in a tent in my backyard with my son and nearly called it quits at 2:00am because I was uncomfortable and couldn’t sleep, so my brain can’t even begin to comprehend spending 6 days on the highest free-standing mountain in the world in freezing temperatures. So, hats off to John and his wife!

I had an interesting experience over Memorial Day weekend. Saturday afternoon I was working in my garden when suddenly my leg began to itch. I figured some dirt had irritated my skin, or perhaps a mosquito got me, so I didn’t think much of it. I carried on working in the yard and nothing seemed out of the ordinary, until the next day when my leg became red and swollen. Also, by this point I was experiencing a significant amount of pain. But, against my better judgement (and despite my wife insisting I see a doctor) I figured I would give it one more day to see if the mystery wound would heal on its own. Welp, it didn’t. In fact, by Monday morning my entire leg was stiff as a board and the wound looked like an image of Saturn as photographed by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft (complete with rings!) The skin on my leg also felt hot to the touch. Now, I’m no medical expert, but my instincts were telling me that’s probably not normal skin behavior. So, after a few ill-advised Google image searches and a healthy dose of encouragement from my lovely wife, I was off to the ER. Turns out it was a spider bite that had become infected and well, it was a good thing I sought medical attention according to the doctor. Short story long, he prescribed me 2 types of antibiotics and I was back to work the next day…playing my own version of doctor by keeping merchant accounts healthy! (I never claimed to be good at segues.)
So it’s June now and today I learned something interesting about this sixth month of the year. In Iceland, folklore says that if you bathe naked in the morning dew on the morning of June 24, you are supposed to keep aging at bay for longer. So this made me wonder, does it have to be Iceland dew, or will any dew do? Heh. In any case, considering June 24 falls on a Monday, I think I’ll suggest this as a team building exercise for L3 at our next meeting.

May is here, which means beautiful weather here in Southern California and, for me, random bouts of sneezing as a deluge of pollen and smog permeates the air. But despite my allergy problem, I do love this time of year. Planting flowers in the garden, barbecues, getting a couple extra hours of daylight after work to play outside with the kids…all good things.
Speaking of good things, L3 Payments had another busy and productive month! In addition to setting up new merchant accounts and helping to keep our merchants compliant, we worked closely with our sister company, SBW, on enhancements to our Gateway, including putting the finishing touches on a new processor integration which will ensure SBW can connect to additional banking relationships in Europe. We’re also getting ready to roll out some new fraud scrubbing options that will be combined with our already robust and sophisticated fraud shield, allowing merchants even more flexibility and protection against the bad guys!
That leads me to Melody Lashmar’s latest article which focuses on some of the innovative ideas the payment processing industry has recently come up with to help stop fraudulent users (“bad guys” is the technical term, I believe). Melody’s article explores those ideas in great detail, so be sure to check it out!
